Things to do at Islay Cottage

Islay Cottage and Jura Cottage are ideally situated for exploring and enjoying the Cairngorms National Park.

Watersports

Loch Insh Watersports offers paddle boarding, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and other watersports with equipment hire and instruction available. Full on adventure offer white water rafting, tubing, canyoning and other water activities. Loch Morlich also offers water sports in an outstanding location. If you enjoy wild swimming Loch an Eilean is a must. We also enjoy Loch Insh (which is really handy) – and Loch Morlich is another prime spot.

Birdwatching

Strathspey is one of Britain’s finest locations for a wide variety of birds. You can study the birds of the flood plains at the RSPB’s Insh Marshes Reserve. See the world famous osprey nest at the Loch Garten reserve – or photograph them at Aviemore Ospreys. At Loch Ruthven you may be lucky enough to see breeding Slavonian grebes and black throated divers. On the high tops, you may glimpse ptarmigans and dotterels, catch the cheeky cackle of the black grouse or see the raptors that wheel above the crags

Highland Wildlife Park

The Highland Wildlife Park is on our doorstep. It specialises in Scotland’s wildlife, past and present, along with endangered animals of the world’s mountains and tundra regions..

Golf

There are golf courses in Kingussie, Newtonmore, Aviemore and many other places in the vicinity.

Walking and hiking

There are walks and hikes for all abilities in this mountain playground. The Cairngorm National Park has a webpage dedicated to these activities. The more adventurous walker may find inspiration on WalkHighlands. Less demanding local walks can be found in Kingussie

Adventure Activities

G2 Outdoor offer Canyoning, White Water Rafting, Gorge Walking, Zip Lining and River Trips as well as many Winter Sports activities and instruction.

Mountain biking

There are tracks all over Strathspey that provide mountain biking for all types, from the sedate to the maniacal. Wolftrax, 30 minutes away, provides 20 miles of purpose-built trails that wind through Laggan Forest, with superb views of the Monadhliath hills on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park. Remember to do the ride thing

In Abernethy Forest

Ski-ing

Cairngorm Mountain, 30 minutes away, offers some of the best downhill skiing in Scotland. The forests of the Strath provide endless trails for cross country skiing.

Fishing

You can fish in the ponds or take lessons at Rothiemurchus, where you can also obtain permits to fish on the Spey.

Shopping

If shopping is your bag, visit the Aviemore site. You might shop the quality brands at Spey Valley. Tanya points out (frequently) that House of Bruar is only 40 minutes away on the A9. Kingussie has an eclectic range of shops.
